A Recipe for Success: Taste of Bosnia's Journey with State Bank
On any given morning inside Taste of Bosnia in south St. Louis County, the aromas of freshly baked pita and grilled meats fill the small dining room before the doors even open.
For owner Elvira Ahmetspahic, every dish that comes out of the kitchen tells a story—one that began thousands of miles away in Bosnia and eventually led her to build a thriving restaurant with the support of a strong banking relationship.
Today, Elvira relies on State Bank for both her business and personal banking, working closely with Vice President and Relationship Manager Amira Kujundzic—a partnership that began not in a boardroom, but over a meal.
“I think the relationship with State Bank started when the restaurant opened,” Elvira said. “Amira came in and ordered food, and we were talking about what it was like running a business during Covid.”
From that first conversation, the connection quickly grew into a long-term partnership. Elvira opened a business checking account with State Bank, and over time added personal accounts as well.
“We developed a personal relationship, so I come in when it fits her schedule,” Kujundzic said.
That accessibility has made a meaningful difference for a small business owner whose workday rarely allows time away from the kitchen.
“Working with State Bank has been really good,” Elvira said. “I can text Amira if I need something and she’s always there. I walk in, and they already know me.”
A Journey That Began Far From St.Louis
Elvira was born in Bosanski Novi, a town in northwest Bosnia. She came to the United States in December 1997, arriving in St. Louis while eight months pregnant.
The St. Louis region already had a growing Bosnian community, many of whom had arrived after fleeing the war in the mid-1990s.
“When we came there were just a few families,” Elvira said.
Like many new immigrants, she spent her early years focused on building stability for her family. She did not work outside the home for 18 months after her child was born. Later, she held a variety of jobs, earned her real estate license, and worked in medical offices while raising her children.
But throughout those years, one dream remained constant.
“I’ve always wanted to be in the kitchen and have my own restaurant,” Elvira said. “But after arriving as refugees, I focused first on building a family and a life with my husband and kids. Then the time was right to pursue my dream.”
Turning a Dream Into a Business
In 2019, Elvira took her first step toward that dream by launching a catering business with a rented kitchen.
Even during the uncertainty of the pandemic, demand for her food continued to grow. That success eventually led her to open a small restaurant space on Union Road in June 2021, combining catering services with a dine-in experience.
Today, Taste of Bosnia seats just 22 guests, but its reputation extends far beyond its size. The restaurant has been featured in local food publications and continues to attract a diverse customer base—from Bosnian expatriates seeking a taste of home to new diners discovering the cuisine for the first time.
Built on Tradition and Hard Work
Inside the kitchen, nearly everything is made from scratch using Elvira’s own recipes.
Preparation begins early each morning with a small team of six employees—many of whom share similar immigrant journeys.
“I love it—it’s exhausting at times—but I love it,” Elvira said. “I make all the entrees every morning.”
Her commitment to quality and authenticity has helped Taste of Bosnia grow steadily through word-of-mouth and repeat customers.
A Relationship That Supports the Business
As a hands-on owner who spends most of her time in the kitchen or out front serving customers, Elvira values the flexibility and personal attention she receives from State Bank.
“We understand she can’t always step away from the restaurant, so the goal is to make banking easy and flexible,” Kujundzic said. “Whatever she needs, we do our best to accommodate.”
That level of responsiveness has become essential to Elvira’s daily operations.
“Most of the time I cannot leave,” Elvira said. “It’s great to have that support. You cannot find it everywhere.”
